Tribute Wau: Preserving Tradition and Inspiring the Next Generation

A Multifunction Pendant by Tina Winness Wong

The Malaysian Wau, an intricately designed kite, is a traditional heritage that is rapidly diminishing. Tribute Wau, designed by Tina Winness Wong, aims to preserve and inspire the next generation of Wau makers by bringing focus to this craft.

Tribute Wau is a unique and captivating design that follows the tradition of handmade craftsmanship. Crafted in 18K gold, this multifunction pendant features a carved Nephrite Jade insert, adding a Chinese touch to an otherwise traditionally Malay piece. The tails of Tribute Wau move with you, reflecting the feel of wind flowing along the kite as it soars through the skies, free of earthly ties.

The realization of Tribute Wau involved a combination of traditional techniques and modern technology. The concept was hand-drawn and then designed in 3D. It was 3D printed and cast to be used as a mold. The pendant is set with natural blue Sapphires, carefully selected and arranged to achieve a beautiful color gradient. The Nephrite Jade is hand-carved and set with brilliant round Diamonds, showcasing the meticulous craftsmanship behind this design.

Measuring 86mm x 18mm x 118mm and weighing 33 grams, Tribute Wau is a wearable piece of art that pays homage to the Malaysian Wau tradition. It can be worn as a pendant or a brooch, and its tails sway with movement, giving the impression of the wind fluttering through them.

Tina Winness Wong, the designer behind Tribute Wau, drew inspiration from the missed opportunity to meet the legendary Master Kite-maker, Shafie Jusoh, who passed away just as she was about to learn more from him about the craft. Studying kite designs and kite-flying activities at International Kite Festivals in Malaysia, Tina incorporated the essence of the wind into the design, evoking a sense of cultural fusion that Malaysia is known for.

Overcoming challenges in both creative and technical aspects, Tina Winness successfully meshed the traditionally Malay kite with Chinese elements, representing the cultural diversity of Malaysia. The production challenge of setting diamonds into the jade was solved by bezel-setting the diamonds before mounting them into the jade, ensuring the integrity of the stone.

Tribute Wau serves as a symbol of honor and preservation, inspiring the next generation of Wau makers. It represents the rich cultural heritage of Malaysia, while embracing the fusion of different cultures. This design was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2019, recognizing its well-designed, practical, and innovative characteristics that contribute to a better world.
